New Year! New Resolutions!

Every few years I actually make new year’s resolutions and then I more or less stick to them. A couple of years ago I bought a lovely, big notebook to keep track of them all (I made a TON of resolutions, or rather wanted to do a lot of things, that year) and actually enjoyed checking the items off the list. It included fun things like “Go to the beach – 2x” and more resolution type things like “save $100 each month”. In the latter case I then made 12 check boxes to tick off when I completed a goal.

I pulled it off the shelf the other day and amusingly enough I had it subtitled “Sandra’s semi-neurotic quantification of New Year’s resolutions – a year-long project” Kind of a fitting name but hey. It was a really awesome project with lots of inspirational quotes and graphics from magazines:

Last month I finished reading Gretchen Rubin’s Happiness Project and she had come up with a similar fun chart to track her goals. I thought about how much fun I had making my New Year’s Resolutions Book and checking off accomplishments. OK it also sucked to have a constant nagging reminder that I STILL hadn’t run a 5k and a few other things but overall it reminded me to be conscious about taking time to do things that I wanted to do for myself to live an active, healthy, and fulfilling life.

This year my resolutions were the exact opposite of this rather specific goal setting (hello MBA) and I believe they were to travel more for fun and to make home-made Christmas gifts. Pinterest sure helped with the latter and I’ll have to dedicate a post to that after the holidays when my friends unwrapped theirs. I also traveled a lot more for fun or made work trips more fun so I call this year a 100% success year in terms of (granted, very easy) resolutions. Pat on the should, Me! (I’m sooo vain… I bet I think this song is about me…)

For next year I have a lot of ideas for several areas of my life so if the world doesn’t come to an end when the Mayan calendar becomes outdated I might just whip out my purple note-book again and fill it some more. I think it’d be fun.

What are your resolutions / plans for 2013?

Express Stuffed Peppers – (You Might Be A Foodie If….)

… the first thing that comes to your mind after cooking an amazing dish is to preserve the memories recipe in a blog post for future reference.

I was craving stuffed bell peppers tonight but honestly after a stressful day at the office and shopping at Target (9 more days until our cruise!!) I really didn’t want to wait an hour and a half until I could pull a meal out of the oven. Seriously, like that’s a week night option!! Sure I could have gotten some frozen instant version of stuffed peppers but I’m trying really hard to avoid Barely-There-Cuisine type uber-engineered meals with a 55 ingredients chemicals list.

So if you are looking for an easy, somewhat healthy and most importantly fast stuffed peppers recipe, you might like what I came up with. I cooked the following in under 30 minutes and even had my living areas vacuumed and the kitchen cleaned up before I sat down with my plate and a glass of Shiraz.

  • Always a good staple on hand, I freeze ground beef/pork in quarters of the rectangular packs. Defrost 2 of them or use fresh if you specifically shop for this meal. (I think that would equate to ca 1/2 lbs of ground meat)
  • I had a set of three bell peppers ($1.99 at ALDI, $3.99 at Target (Just saying)) and I washed and beheaded them and got rid of the seeds.
  • Place the peppers open side up in a microwavable dish and add a cm of water to the dish. Microwave on high for 3 minutes.
  • Combine raw ground beef, ca 1/2 cup or instant rice (the one that takes 5 minutes to boil), 14oz of tomato sauce (1/2 a big can), garlic powder (I used ca 1 tablespoon but you could easily crush 2-3 cloves of fresh garlic and use those), red crushed pepper flakes (I used way too much! Hello mouth on fire! Try 1 tablespoon or substitute with paprika and black pepper), a bit of salt and a dash of sugar. Now, I’m thinking if you don’t have enough ground meat or rice on hand you could also easily use bread crumbs as filler.
  • Fill the now a little softer bell peppers with the mix. Cover and microwave for 10 minutes. Ding! Food is done! Don’t burn your hands or lips!

I’m going to unstuff the left-over peppers and add some more sauce so they’ll heat up better for lunch. Definitely making them again!

Oh X-mas Pickle, You Warm My Cold German Heart

It’s The Most – Wonderful Time – of The Yearrrrrr! I realize hordes of people exclaim that they cannot wait for the holidays to be over  but I surely am not one of them! We’re in the midst of the Holidays and I’m loving it!

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite US holidays of the year: Great food, great company and remembering all the many reasons to be thankful for make for a wonderful day if you ask me. For a low stress version of the day I opted to forgo the wonderful and very elaborate feast at one of my best friend’s family’s house this year and instead do a low key dinner and relax at zee boyfriend’s home.

Arugula salad, a turkey breast, gravy, boxed cornbread stuffing, bacon brussel sprouts, frozen sweet potato souflee, cranberry chutney that I made the night before and store bought pecan pie with ice cream made for an easy but fantastic dinner! All recipes here. We all lit a candle and said what we are thankful for – which I thought was a sweet tradition to adopt from M’s family.

Freedom Tower Nov 2012Every year the day after Thanksgiving I have to travel to New York for a tradeshow. I really despise the schedule for that show but have started to look at it as “how lucky am I to travel to one of the coolest cities in the world when all the holiday decorations are up?!” It seems to work a little bit to get a positive attitude but still…. What always makes having that holiday weekend crushed to a one day weekend better is meeting up with old friends. This year the fabulous Maren showed me some of her favorite places around Washington Square and I chatted for hours with my college friends Katie and her published author hubby Dave about life, love and intercultural coupling. Wish we all lived closer! They also gave me the tip that the Met has a recommended admission fee so I snuck in there for an hour for $5 before flying home.

Oh also, I ate grasshoppers. Did not enjoy their legs in my mouth but the flavor was decent. Only in New York…

Well I’m finally home and brought a nasty cold with me (fail).  Sickly, having a cold always makes me really excited about making chicken noodle soup (OMG it’s sooo good) so I giddily chopped potatoes and carrots with my love. Same wonderful guy came over and cooked a green minestrone for me last night. I feel so loved.

Christmas PickleAmidst all that my Christmas tree came out and it now even has its very own Christmas Pickle. This is supposedly a German tradition – except nobody in Germany hangs pickles in their trees. Oh America. Thank you for thinking labeling something German will make it a best seller. Alas, I do love my Christmas Pickle sooo!

Twenty more days until Christmas! I still have to make a handful of hand-made gifts and buy some but am about half way done with gift shopping. Got my hand on some German Christmas chocolates and cookies from Aldi (as well as GREAT tangerines! Most of the ones I find in the US have a yucky consistency and have seeds… *tangerine snob*). Hope y’all are embracing advent or which ever other holidays you are celebrating! If you are still looking for gifts, I’d much appreciate if you’d consider my hand-made jewelry. Thanks for reading y’all!

Color Challenge Reveal

What a fun project this was! Call me slightly insane as November was looking to be super busy with a conference in Savannah and a trade show in New York but I loved both color palettes I was given in this challenge so much I wanted to make something for both.

1. Richat Structure

This stunning satellite photo of the Eye of The Sahara or Richat Structure inspired Birgit’s birthday necklace:

The satellite photo immediately reminded me of a green aventurine donut that I had in my stash. I paired it with aventurine chips, dark green saguaro jasper, semi-baroque pearls and seed beads. Everyone knows Saguaro Cacti so what better gem to use in a dessert inspired piece of jewelry?! Anyway, my BFF who got it for her birthday seemed to like it. 🙂

2. Campeche

This bay in south-eastern Mexico looks too awesome! I instantly craved being at the beach with a margarita in my hand. Alas, I had more pressing things to do like designing a Campeche-inspired bracelet. I did want to incorporate the fun Mexican feel this photo gave me so I went digging through my beads. While I found the cutest red flower beads and gorgeous teal beads, something was missing. The gals at Beads on A String shop luckily had just what I wanted: a luscious giant pebble of red coral. Yum!

Campeche Bracelet

For a while now I had been wanting to use these woody feel Betel nut beads so I combined them with the pebble and red quartzite for the center strand of the bracelet. I added a strand of imperial jasper and three of the dainty red flower beads. I love how they are carved but was always worried they would make a piece look like fresh out of a Chinese restaurant. Disaster averted I’d say. Quite pleased with how fun they look next to the turquoise jasper.

For the third strand I strung red shell beads and three bigger imperial jasper beads. Then I carefully twisted and braided the strands and attached them to the other end clasp. This was my first time to try to make a twisted three strands bracelet and let me tell you, after all that careful arranging it was a bit disappointing to see how with some twisting and turning of the clasp you can straighten them back out and re-braid them. Duh! Nice surprise I suppose. 🙂

I’m quite pleased with how these two projects turned out and had a lot of fun pushing my jewelry making horizon. What a great challenge!
