You’ll Never Forget How to Ride A Bike

Part of my wonderful birthday surprise from dear fiancé was the awesome gift of a new bicycle! He had given me a region free DVD player (so now I can watch all my German DVDs (that are all in Germany,… minor detail)!!) and a massage gift certificate earlier in the evening and taken me to a restaurant I had been meaning to try forever so quite frankly, I thought my birthday was awesome and done with. Oh no. We came back home after dinner and he called me down into the den where he was waiting with a beautiful, super fancy hybrid bike. Swoon!

Blue bike birthday surprise! Whoop whoop!

My first thought was “Oh sweeeet! Now I don’t have to research bikes to buy one!” Hehe. I had been wanting to get one this summer but had been dreading doing the research what with all the wedding prep. Mind you this is the first time I’ve had a bike in forever! I don’t even think I had one in college but perhaps I had one in Hamburg for a very short period of time. And all those bike’s I had had were completely functioning right outside the box. Apparently that’s not the case with fancy bikes. The babe was busy over the next couple of days to mount a kickstand and lights and a lock (don’t think we’ve figured out how to mount that one just yet. YOU’D THINK!!).

But finally everything was put together and I had gloves and a helmet (Don’t ride without one peeps! Don’t want your noggin to be smashed!). So off we went! I was sooooo nervous (and giddy – hello 32 year old child). Shifting gears?! I’ve never had a bike with more than 8 gears and I’d always been able to break by trying to pedal backwards. But, thankfully, that wasn’t hard and it really is like the saying – you never forget how to ride a bike! This one translates beautifully into German, too, although we never “unlearn” how to ride a bike. No training wheels needed!

Survived my first ride!

So we’re excited to go on bike rides in our neighborhood, to visit our friends who just moved a mile and a half away from us, and to drive up to the bar that’s a mile and a half in the other direction. We’ve mapped out parks and the Virginia Kreeper Trail and look forward to being active outdoors together. What a great gift!

It’s A Summer Party…

… Come on come on come on! Yup, that was a TERRIBLE German song from one of my favorite soaps probably about 2 decades ago.  One thing I’ve learned from living abroad: Germans are known for bad taste in music. Not sure what happened after Bach and Beethoven but our (supposed) obsession with David Hasselhoff sure hasn’t helped us.

Anyhow, I’m another year older! I have no idea where the first half of the year went but it definitely flew by in what seemed like a split-second. Wasn’t it just last week that we had champagne at the strike of midnight on New Year’s Eve?! Alas, summer is pretty much in full swing here in the Carolinas. When I walk out the door in the mornings a blanket of heat engulfs me. I’m quite lucky with the new job though – they don’t cool the office down to icebox level (just to comfort level) so I can actually wear cute summer dresses to work! #winning

This past weekend I had invited a few people over to celebrate and I have to say, our house is just perfect for entertaining! So happy about that! Definitely was missing an attached outdoor space and the yard in my old apartment. I had found some cute decorative paper elements and finally found a reason to buy a few packs of those super adorable paper straws. The backyard looked awesome!

I slaved all day getting groceries, decorating and preparing shredded pork BBQ from the crockpot, a Greek salad and some delish pink lemonade cupcakes. It always looks so freaking effortless on Pinterest!!! Roar! OK so it probably would have been less stressful had I gotten up earlier and not procrastinated as long but come on, it was my b-day! Thank heavens for friends that don’t mind lending a hand when they come to party! Great times! The soccer world cup was on, we played some horseshoe toss, there was music on the patio and the sun was shining.

The best thing however was when Michael unexpectedly made it to the party! He was supposed to fly to South America but they wound up having enough crew and he was able to come home! Guys, you have no idea what it means when your junior pilot is home on a Saturday night AND it’s your birthday party! 🙂 SQUEAL!!!

Spring is here!

Finally finally finally spring has arrived! This winter was unusually cold for North Carolina. It’s not every year that we get a foot of snow! Strangely enough zee parents kept telling me it was an unusually warm winter in Germany. Go figure!
In any case, spring is here now and will hopefully stay. Mind you spring in the Carolinas usually means 25C all of a sudden with a few days of what us Central Europeans think of as spring.
So while in the fall and winter we spent a lot of time working on our house’s insides now we’re hitting the yard.
I have this experiment going on called “a garden”. You could also call it project “I hope my thumb is greener than it looks”.
Michael helped me build a raised garden bed and fence and I sowed carrots, beers, spinach, arugula, mesclun and lettuce. Three weeks later things have sprouted!!! To me, that’s success! If all goes well we should be able to harvest our own organic, locally grown, garden to table veggies in a few weeks! OMG! My farmer step-dad is so proud.

Then we also got patio furniture! In fact, I’m sitting on one of the comfy chairs right now typing this! The birds are chirping, Alfi-Dog is laying next to me and right at this moment life is good.
The patio is still work in progress and I have lots of plans for some more additions once I get back from next week’s trade show in – drumroll – Sweden!!!
For now, cheers my dears!

Ninty Day Engagement Check-In

We’ve been watching this show “90 Day Fiance” where Americans bring their fiancees to the country with a K1 visa and then have to get married within 90 days. As a multi-national couple we can relate to a few of the issues the couples are facing like missing family members and friends from abroad that can’t attend their weddings here. But then they also deal with issues like creepy ex-wives, the girl not eating in front of her future in-laws or them just marrying for green cards. Us, not so much! In fact, I vividly recall stuffing my face with glorious southern food at the waffle house in front of Michael’s parents while my green card was in my purse. Smothered, covered, loaded, gravied, …., hash browns?! Bring it on!!

But they all achieve one thing very nicely: planning their weddings in 90 days. Kudos folks! Our planning is progressing really well going into 90 days of engagement, I’d say but I am sooooooo glad we still have 6 months until our big day.

We knocked out a few big items very fast. I had wanted to beat the rush from the newly engaged couples on Christmas so I was stressing out about a venue immediately after we came back from Vermont. I searched for venues around town and requested available dates and proposals right away. I loved the ones that had their rental fees published on their website! Sooo much easier! Luckily our barn had a few Saturdays in September open and after we snug out there to check it out I literally caught the lady during her last half hour in the office before leaving for the holidays and put our deposit down. Phew! Most important thing covered!

The next big item of the list that I was concerned about was the photographer. It seemed like either people’s photos were so average that I could take better photos (and I don’t want to pay for something I can do myself though that’d be hard on your own wedding day… It’s like going out to eat and you keep thinking I could do a better job. Just agitating.) The other extreme were beautiful story telling photos but at double our budget. Uffda! If you are one of my married friends I probably asked you who your wedding photographer was. Googling “wedding photographer” gets old when there are 181 million results and everyone with an iPhone calls themselves Wedding Photographer.

Will and Sara to the rescue! A friendly couple we know is getting married in May (yay congrats!) and their photographers a) had a great portfolio of beautiful wedding shots b) were in our price range and c) were open on our wedding day! Oh-mi-gosh! We spoke to them on the phone and drilled them with the obligatory “questions to ask your wedding photographer”, which they all answered to our full satisfaction. (ie Do you have back-up equipment? What happens if you are sick on our wedding day? Can we see a few complete weddings shots instead of just the highlights? ….. google a list, it’s helpful!) So bam, wedding photographer contract signed. Now we just have to figure out our complimentary engagement photo session.

We also talked to a few local hotels about blocks and picked the best deal for our guests. They were surprisingly terrible when it came to negotiating – I must be losing my German fear-inducing side. Hmpf! Michael found super awesome transportation between our venue and hotel. This was important to us, we didn’t need anyone to not have a glass of wine because of having to drive and a barn isn’t really a place that taxis hang out at….

We also have my dress and the bridesmaids dresses, our wedding bands, rental furniture and decoration, cake topper, save the dates and a few cool ideas for the reception. All in all, not bad for 90 days in and the more we plan and the big day comes together the more excited we are getting. *Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaal* 😀
